Chapter 15

Brianna

“Do you have any clue what this meeting is about?” Natalie asked me.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” I said. We were in the conference room waiting and I really didn’t give a shit what the meeting was about. I had heavier shit on my mind. I was going to kick Vince in the nuts the next time I saw his lying face.

“Maybe they are announcing the new partner today.”

“I doubt it. That is not supposed to happen for another couple of weeks.” I kept looking at my phone, waiting for Vince to reply to my text. I had called him ten times that morning from the car when I was on my way to work. I texted him, but he hadn’t replied yet.

“Well, there is nothing else I can think of,” she said.

“Nat, we just have to wait and see, okay.” I wanted her to shut up. I couldn’t think. My brain was on the stuck on Christina being pregnant with my man’s child.

With fear in her eyes, Natalie asked. “Are you nervous?”

I grabbed her hand. “Shit, yes,” I lied. The stress on my face and my shaking hands had nothing to do with that damn meeting.

“So am I.”

Trying to calm her down and shut her up, I said. “I want you to have it.” I didn’t mean that shit, but I played nice. I wanted it so badly, but I would be happy for Natalie if she got it.

“No, no, no, you deserve it, Brianna. You came aboard a little bit before me and I lied. It took me two tries to pass the bar, so you deserve it.”

“I hate this. I hate being up against you, Natalie. If you get it, I promise I will be happy for you.” I wanted it, God knows I did, but I wasn’t a sore loser. I’d wait in line for my turn. At least that’s the bullshit I told myself to keep from telling Natalie I knew I should be next. I wanted to tell her she was right, I was more qualified. And I did pass the bar on my very first try.

“I hate this too, and if you get it, I’m going to be pissed and may need a week or two away from you.” She laughed.

All I could do was laugh with her. Natalie had a little bitch in her. Vince was right, she wouldn’t be cool if I got it.

Shit. Back to Vince. I was going to chop his dick off. How could he ruin our future by getting Christina’s dumb ass pregnant? He vowed he was using condoms every single time. That bastard. I couldn’t wait to slap the shit out of him.

“Ladies,” one of the senior partners said when he entered the room.

“Hello.”

“Good afternoon, sir,” I said. I was so nervous that I knew I was shaking.

“The meeting will start in a moment. Would you ladies like anything? Juice, tea … bourbon?” he joked.

I laughed to keep from crying. I just wanted to know what this last-minute important meeting was about.
